March 1912 Louisiana State University Bulletin printing of this biographical essay about General William Tecumseh Sherman, who presided as president of the university from 1859 to 1861, reprinted from The South Atlantic Quarterly magazine; from the library of Philemon Tecumseh Sherman. Octavo, original wrappers, wood engraved portraits of Abraham Lincoln laid in. In good condition with some loss and closed tears to the front and rear panels. Autograph letter signed by American author George Iles to Philemon T. Sherman laid in, one page, the letter reads: "Oct. 24 1908 P. Tecumseh Sherman Esq. Sir: In a few days you will receive 'Little Masterpieces of Autobiography,' six vols. In Vol. II are the papers you have been kind enough to allow me to reprint from the memoirs of General Sherman. Yours respectfully George Iles." General Sherman's library was inherited by P. T. Sherman, who transferred the library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria “Minnie” Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, the book was held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
