First British illustrated edition of the author’s masterpiece and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Octavo, bound in full modern morocco by Morrell with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, pictorial front panel in gilt with gilt title, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, tissue-guarded frontispiece, illustrated with sixteen black and white woodcuts. In fine condition. Illustrated by Clare Leighton. Clare Leighton was a British-American artist and illustrator best known for her masterful wood engravings that vividly depict rural labor and the natural world with both technical precision and emotional depth. She was the first woman to author a comprehensive book on the art of wood engraving, Wood-Engraving and Woodcuts (1932), a landmark publication that combined technical instruction with critical reflection on the aesthetic and historical significance of the medium.
