Association copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the half-title page, "For Toby and Mille with my thanks for their hospitality and friendship Thomas Harris Oct. 21, 1981." The recipients were close personal friends of Harris, whose isolated house he stayed at for 18 months writing Red Dragon and where he conceived the character of Hannibal Lecter amidst his nocturnal breaks in the cotton fields.
