First edition of Beagle’s classic second book, a landmark work of modern fantasy that blends mythic storytelling with lyrical prose and philosophical depth. Octavo, original publisher's half cloth, top stain purple. Association copy, lengthily inscribed by the author to fellow writer Annie Dillard on the title page, “'The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone.' For Annie Peter Beagle." The recipient, fellow author Annie Dillard has published works of poetry, essays, prose, and literary criticism, as well as two novels and one memoir. Her 1974 work Pilgrim at Tinker Creek won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction and her books have been translated into at least ten languages.
