  First edition of this autobiographical recollection of a lawyer and American ambassador to the United Kingdom, privately printed by Caroline Sterling Choate; from the library of Philemon Tecumseh Sherman. Octavo, original half cloth, tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Joseph Hodges Choate at the age of seventeen, illustrated throughout with several tissue-guarded photographs, "With the Compliments of Mrs. Joseph H. Choate" note laid in. P. T. Sherman's bookplate to the front free endpaper beneath his inscription, "Uncle Cump studied Law in the office of Evert's Choate + Beaman 1889 E.S.F." Friends and family of General William Tecumseh Sherman often referred to him by the nickname “Cump.” In near fine condition with some toning to the spine. Housed in the original publisher's slipcase which is missing the bottom panel. General William Tecumseh Sherman’s son Philemon Tecumseh Sherman's library was transferred to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria “Minnie” Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, this book was held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
