    First edition of this classic work by Robert Browning exploring dramatic monologue and narrative poetry, inscribed by Browning in each volume. Octodecimo, two volumes, bound in full levant morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within gilt raised bands, triple gilt ruling to boards, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, doublures of blue levant morocco to pastedowns, crimson moire endpapers, all edges gilt. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page in volume one, "Mrs. Skirrow with RB's affectionate regards. Apr. 26 '79," and in volume two, "Mrs. Skirrow with RB's affectionate regards, June 27 '80." Mrs. Charles (Amelia Cherry) Skirrow is noted to be one of a small and devoted circle of women who were enamored of the aging Browning. In near fine condition with some marginal toning. Cloth dust jackets are in very good condition. From the library of noted collector William A. Strutz with his small bookplate to the pastedown, with an additional ownership plate from Jerome Kern. Housed in a custom slipcases.

    First edition of Robert Browning's greatest work. Octodecimo, four volumes, contemporary tree calf bound in full morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spines in six compartments within gilt raised bands, gilt ruling to boards, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the second free endpaper, "Robert Browning wishes he had been privileged to give this work to his friends. Nov. 30. '75." The recipient, George Craik was a partner in Macmillan and Co., who married author Dinah Maria Mulock in 1864. Mulock was a friend and correspondent of Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and dedicated her novel 'The Head of the Family' to Elizabeth. In very good condition with rubbing to the extremities, splitting to the hinges of volume four, and skillful rebacking to preserve the original spines of each volume. From the library of noted collector William A. Strutz with his small bookplate to the pastedown, with an additional ownership plate from George Lillie Craik. Housed in a custom folding chemise and half morocco slipcase.

Octodecimo, contemporary tree calf bound in full morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within gilt raised bands, gilt ruling to boards, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. Presentation copy, lengthily inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "My last poem, published a week ago: It is a good omen for the poem I am now beginning [to] thank my friends [who] made the request to me which I have gladly complied with - that of declaring myself, theirs truly yours Robert Browning. Nov. 30. '75." The recipient, George Craik was a partner in Macmillan and Co., who married the author Dinah Maria Mulock in 1864.     First edition of this poetic retelling of Euripides' 'Alkestis' by Victorian poet Robert Browning. Octodecimo, original cloth with gilt titles to the spine and decorative borders stamped in black to the front and rear panels. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "Mrs. Procter -- with RB's affectionate regards." The recipient was presumably the wife of Browning's long-time friend and correspondent, Bryan Waller Procter, one of the numerous lawyer-poets of nineteenth-century England. From the library of noted collector William Strutz with his small bookplate to the front pastedown. In very good condition. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed.
