Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 through 1968. King led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and in 1957 became the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). With the SCLC, he led an unsuccessful 1962 struggle against segregation in Albany, Georgia. Pope John's Pacem in Terris was issued on April 11, 1963. The day after, on April 12, King would be arrested for his nonviolent protesting against racism and racial segregation in Birmingham, Alabama, writing his Letter from Birmingham Jail on the 16th.
