First edition of this important turn-of-the-19th century work on the inhabitants of Haiti and St. Domingo which discusses at length the struggle for independence among the black colonies, slavery, and the relationship with America. Quarto, bound in three quarter calf over marbled boards with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine, marbled endpapers and edges, illustrated with an engraved map, plan, and ten striking full-page illustrated plates, advertisement at rear. Sabin 67531. In very good condition, the engraved folding map with repairs, bookplate to the pastedown.
