First edition of Hersey's classic work, which has sold over three million copies. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to fellow writer and publisher Kirby Congdon on the front free endpaper, "For Kirby Congdon: 'The crux of the matter is whether total war...is justified even when it serves a just purpose.' pp. 117-118. John Hersey February 24, 1985." Jacket design by Warren Chappell. Hersey's account of the aftermath of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, was judged the finest piece of American journalism of the 20th century by a 36-member panel associated with New York University's journalism department. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed.

First edition of this fictionalized history of a Stradivarius violin named "Antonietta," created in 1699, Cormac McCarthy's copy with his name to the front free endpaper. Octavo, original publisher's wrappers. Boldly signed by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy on the front free endpaper. Both Cormac McCarthy and John Hersey were published by Alfred A. Knopf, one of the most prestigious American publishing houses of the twentieth century. Knopf played a significant role in shaping the literary reputations of both authors, issuing Hersey’s works—including Hiroshima—and later publishing many of McCarthy’s major novels, thereby situating both writers within a distinguished tradition of American literary and journalistic excellence.
