The complete writings of George Washington compiled by Jared Sparks. Large octavo, 12 volumes, uniformly bound in full modern calf with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, gilt scrolling to the front and rear panels, gilt central Heraldic eagle to each front panel, gilt turn-ins, tissue-guarded frontispiece of Washington to volumes 1-3; the frontispiece to volume 1 a portrait of Washington engraved by J.W. Paradise after a painting by J.G. Chapman, itself after a painting by C.W. Peale; the frontispieces to volumes 2 and 3 engraved by A.B. Durand, that of volume 2 after a painting by Gilbert Stuart; additional frontispiece portrait to volume 12 of Martha Washington engraved by J. Cheney. Editor Jared Sparks was a noted early American historian who served as editor of the North American Review and as a Unitarian pastor in Baltimore before becoming President of Harvard College. His edition of the writings of Washington remains his most celebrated contribution to American historical letters. In very good condition. A very attractive set.
