First Edition of Alfred F. Loomis' Ocean Racing; From the Library of General George S. Patton with his Ownership Signatures
LOOMIS, Alfred F. [George S. Patton].
Ocean Racing: The Great Blue-Water Yacht Races 1866-1935.
New York: William Morrow and Company, 1936.
First edition of this classic yachting work, signed twice by General George S. Patton. Octavo, original publisher's cloth stamped in blind and gilt, illustrated. From the library of General George S. Patton with his ownership signatures to the front panel, "G.S. Patton, Jr." and front free endpaper, "G S Patton June 27 1936." In 1936, George Patton was a lieutenant colonel serving in staff and training roles in Hawaii. He did not command combat troops but worked on tactical doctrine while continuing to advocate for armored warfare. A decorated WWI veteran, he was regarded as talented but abrasive, with his career slowed by the Army's small size and resistance to innovation during the interwar years. Patton suffered a serious head injury playing polo in 1936, one of many equestrian accidents in his life. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box.
