First edition of Borchgrevink’s detailed account of the first expedition to establish a base on the main body of the continent. Octavo, original publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles and explorer to the spine, gilt titles to the front panel with ship vignette in gilt and silver, top edge gilt, tissue-guarded photogravure portrait frontispiece, 32 pages of advertisements to the rear, and profusely illustrated with 3 folding maps, 18 full-page plates, and 186 illustrations. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the dedication page, "Nurse Brackley, from the author, July 9th 1901." In very good condition with rubbing, recased. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed.
