When she was nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1993 to replace retiring justice Byron White, Ginsburg became both the first Jewish woman and the second woman to serve on the Court, after Sandra Day O’Connor. Ginsburg was born and grew up in Brooklyn, New York, earned degrees at Cornell University and Columbia Law School, and began her career as a professor at Rutgers Law School and Columbia Law School, teaching civil procedure as one of the few women in her field.
