  • First Edition of Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance; Inscribed by Him to Director Alan Schneider in the Year of Publication, With an Original Cast Photograph

    ALBEE, Edward. [Alan Schneider].

    A Delicate Balance.

    New York: Atheneum, 1966.

First edition of Albee’s Pulitzer Prize–winning drama, a remarkable association copy linking the play to its original Broadway production. Octavo, original black cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the half-title page, "For Alan love, Edward 12.24. 66." The recipient, Alan Schneider directed the premiere of A Delicate Balance at the Martin Beck Theatre in September 1966, starring Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn. The production extended one of the defining partnerships of the postwar American stage: Schneider had directed the premiere of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? four years earlier, winning the Tony Award for his direction, and remained Albee’s most trusted interpreter. Reviewing the opening night for The New York Times, Walter Kerr observed that “it is precisely hollowness that is most on Mr. Albee’s mind.” Together with an original pre-production gelatin silver photograph of Albee with the cast, with a few light creases. Very good in a very good dust jacket. An exceptional association copy.
