First editions of Alexander Pope’s monumental illustrated translations of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, the deluxe subscribers’ quarto issue on thick paper, esteemed by Samuel Johnson as “certainly the noblest version of poetry which the world has ever seen.” Quarto, eleven volumes, uniformly bound in full contemporary speckled calf with gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands, modern morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, double gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, illustrated with two large copper-engraved frontispiece busts of Homer by George Vertue (one in the Iliad, another in the Odyssey), one double-page map, one folding plate, the "Shield of Achilles" plate in Volume V of the Iliad (often missing), and numerous engraved historiated initials and elaborate head- and tail-pieces. The Iliad extra-illustrated with a folding view of Troy and 38 additional plates from Ogilby's Homer; the Odyssey extra-illustrated with 30 plates; plates cut down, removing any text at the foot. Certainly, Pope's long-lasting literary fame rests to a large degree on the great success and extensive influence of these translations. Barrett was an American academic and a trustee of the Boston Athenaeum, a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and he was also elected to the Harvard Board of Overseers. Bookplate of William Whitwell Greenough. Greenough was a Boston merchant and politician, trustee of the Boston Public Library, 1856-1888, President of the Board of Trustees, 1866-1888. Important autograph letter signed by Frank Lloyd Wright to friend and architectural critic, Lewis Mumford. Letter is 19 inches by 8.5 inches. It reads, "My dear Lewis: I’ve read "The Brown Decade" you so kindly sent me and it is a useful work in your splendid style. I didn’t agree in total but admire and respect. I was sorry to see so little of you in New York- intending to see you if I saw no one else. And the stupidity of wandering around in the Lehigh Starret building while you were waiting for me at 41 west 12th street rises to plague me still. Dutchy and I saw something of Catherine Bauer in New York. The Guggenheim has asked me for a recommendation for the new work she wants to do and I my best- but wrote her what I thought of her thesis. You know what I must think about that. Enclosed is a copy of what I think about it for your files if you care for it. Wright would later accept the contract to build the Guggenheim three years later in 1943, Hilla Rebay, the curator stated to Wright that he wanted to build, "A temple of spirit, a monument!" Matted and framed.

Additionally signed and inscribed by the illustrator Ron Miller, who has also added a drawing. Sagan tells the following story: Sagan was in London for a scientific conference in 1974, and between sessions he wandered into a different room, where a larger meeting was taking place. "I realized that I was watching an ancient ceremony: the investiture of new fellows into the Royal Society, one of the most ancient scholarly organizations on the planet. In the front row, a young man in a wheelchair was, very slowly, signing his name in a book that bore on its earliest pages the signature of Isaac Newton... Stephen Hawking was a legend even then." In his introduction, Sagan goes on to add that Hawking is the "worthy successor" to Newton and Paul Dirac, both former Lucasian Professors of Mathematics.
