Hiroshima’s 81st Anniversary: A Defining Moment in History.
Today marks the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima—an event that profoundly shaped the course of modern history.
The use of nuclear weapons brought World War II to an end but also introduced a new era marked by the threat of atomic destruction. Hiroshima symbolized the immense human cost of total war and raised enduring ethical questions about technological power.

Building the Bomb

The weapon used at Hiroshima was the product of the Manhattan Project, the secret wartime effort to harness nuclear fission before Nazi Germany could. Its scientific heart was the laboratory at Los Alamos, New Mexico, directed by the theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. He assembled and led an extraordinary community of scientists there, translating abstract physics into a working weapon in barely two years, and emerged from the war as the public face of the atomic age, celebrated as the “father of the atomic bomb.”

Officially titled Atomic Energy for Military Purposes and written by the Princeton physicist Henry D. Smyth, this report was released by the War Department days after Nagasaki as the first authorized public account of the bomb’s development. It described, in as much detail as security allowed, the scientific and industrial effort behind the weapon, and for years it defined the boundary between what could and could not be said about nuclear science. Known simply as the Smyth Report, it became the founding document of public understanding of the atomic age.

Building the bomb was not only a feat of physics but of precision manufacturing. At Los Alamos, machinists and technicians fabricated the weapon’s components to exacting tolerances, and simple tools such as inspection mirrors were used to examine surfaces that could not be seen directly. Objects like this are a reminder that the theoretical breakthroughs of Oppenheimer and his colleagues depended on the hands-on craftsmanship of the men who actually assembled “the gadget.”

Edward Teller was among the first physicists recruited to Los Alamos, where he contributed to the atomic bomb while already pressing for a far more powerful weapon based on nuclear fusion. After the war he became the leading champion of the hydrogen bomb and a central, polarizing figure in American defense science. His testimony against Oppenheimer at the 1954 security hearing earned him the lasting estrangement of many former colleagues.
The Trinity Test

Before any bomb could be used in war, its untested implosion design had to be proven. On July 16, 1945, in the desert near Alamogordo, New Mexico, the Manhattan Project detonated the first nuclear device in a test code-named Trinity. The explosion released energy equivalent to roughly 20,000 tons of TNT, its flash seen for hundreds of miles, and confirmed that the plutonium weapon would work. The Los Alamos photographer Berlyn Brixner recorded the blast frame by frame, producing the earliest photographs of a nuclear explosion.

Within seconds the fireball rose and cooled into the towering mushroom cloud that would become the defining image of the nuclear age. Witnesses at the test described a mixture of triumph and dread; Oppenheimer later recalled that the moment brought to mind a line from the Bhagavad Gita, “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” Three weeks after Trinity, the design it validated was used over Hiroshima.
The Enola Gay and the Mission

On the morning of August 6, 1945, a B-29 Superfortress named Enola Gay took off from the Pacific island of Tinian carrying a uranium bomb known as “Little Boy.” The aircraft was commanded by Colonel Paul Tibbets, who had organized and trained the 509th Composite Group specifically to deliver the atomic bomb and had named the plane for his mother. His hand-picked crew flew the mission that would open the atomic era in warfare.

At 8:15 a.m., over the center of Hiroshima, “Little Boy” detonated roughly 1,900 feet above the city with a force of some 15,000 tons of TNT. The blast and the firestorm that followed destroyed much of Hiroshima in moments and killed tens of thousands of people outright. From the departing aircraft the crew watched a column of smoke and debris climb miles into the sky, the first such sight ever produced by a weapon used in war.

The Enola Gay became one of the most famous aircraft in history. After the war it was preserved and eventually placed on display at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, where its presence has repeatedly provoked debate over how the bombing should be remembered. The B-29 Superfortress itself was the most advanced heavy bomber of the war, and its long range made the mission from the Pacific islands possible.

Return of the Enola Gay is Paul Tibbets’s own account of the mission and of the long controversy that trailed it, from the training of the 509th Composite Group through the bombing and the decades of public argument that followed. Tibbets never wavered in his conviction that the mission had shortened the war and spared far greater loss of life, and the book stands as the pilot’s firsthand answer to his critics.
Hiroshima and Its Chronicle

First published in 1946, John Hersey’s Hiroshima reconstructs the day of the bombing and its aftermath through the experiences of six survivors—two doctors, a widowed seamstress, a German Jesuit priest, a young clerk, and a Methodist minister. The New Yorker devoted an entire issue to the piece, and its restrained, documentary prose conveyed the human reality of the bomb in a way that casualty figures could not. Widely regarded as one of the most important works of journalism of the twentieth century, it remains a foundational text of the nuclear age.
The Nuclear Age After

Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the war but opened an age defined by the bomb. In the summer of 1946 the United States staged Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific, detonating nuclear weapons against a fleet of nearly a hundred target ships to study their effects. Witnessed by tens of thousands of servicemen and observers, the tests marked the beginning of the long era of atmospheric nuclear testing and the displacement of the atoll’s inhabitants.
