First edition of John Butler Yeats’ collection of essays. Octavo, original cloth with paper labels to the spine and front panel, engraved frontispiece portrait of Yeats with tissue guard. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper by Yeats’ daughters Lily and Lolly, “To Mrs. Gamble with love from Lily and Lolly Yeats – January 10. 1919.” In very good condition.

John Butler Yeats was an Irish portrait painter and the father of William Butler Yeats, Lily Yeats, Elizabeth Corbett "Lolly" Yeats and Jack B. Yeats. Each would build careers in the arts: Lily as an embroider, Lolly as an educator and publisher, Jack as an illustrator, and William as a poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature.
