First Edition of David Ewen's New Complete Book of the American Musical Theater; From the Library of Broadway Composer Charles Strouse
First new revised edition of David Ewen’s comprehensive reference guide to the American musical theater, a show-by-show history of the Broadway musical from its beginnings. Thick octavo, original decorative cloth. From the library of Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award-winning composer Charles Strouse and his wife, choreographer Barbara Siman, with Strouse's ownership stamp to the front free endpaper. Over his 50-year career, Charles Strouse wrote the music for such iconic musical theater hits as Bye Bye Birdie, Applause, and Annie, as well as the theme song for the classic sitcom All in the Family ("Those Were the Days"). His partnership with Martin Charnin on Annie produced one of Broadway's most successful scores ever, with "Tomorrow" and other songs from the production becoming enduring American musical standards admired by generations. His reach knew no genre or generation, from a number-one Billboard hit in 1958 to Jay-Z's Grammy-winning sampling of "It's the Hard-Knock Life" four decades later, and his honors include three Tony Awards and induction into both the Songwriters and Theater Halls of Fame. In very good condition with soiling to the cloth and two small knicks to the front panel. Illustrated with photographs from the Vandamm Collection of the New York Public Library.
New Complete Book of the American Musical Theater (1970) is David Ewen’s comprehensive and much-expanded encyclopedia of the Broadway musical, offering show-by-show accounts of the plots, songs, creators, and productions of hundreds of American musicals from the nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth. David Ewen (1907-1985) was among the most prolific and widely read American writers on music, the author of more than eighty books on composers, opera, popular song, and the musical stage. First published in 1958 as The Complete Book of the American Musical Theater, the work was revised and enlarged in this new edition, which the author dedicated to the composer Richard Rodgers.
