First Edition of Merck's Index of Fine Chemicals and Drugs for the Materia Medica and the Arts; The Foundation of the Celebrated Merck Index
Rare first edition of Merck’s Index, the celebrated reference of chemicals and drugs first issued in 1889 and published continuously ever since as the standard Merck Index. Octavo, bound in publisher’s blue cloth decoratively blind-stamped in panels, the spine lettered in gilt. A desirable copy from the library of Merck & Co. of Rahway, New Jersey, with the company’s library stamp to the front free endpaper and bookplate to the front pastedown. In very good condition.
Merck’s Index (1889) is the first edition of the reference now known simply as the Merck Index, a comprehensive encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs, and biologicals compiled by the pharmaceutical house founded by the Merck family at Darmstadt. Conceived as a guide for the physician, apothecary, chemist, and dealer, it set out the chemical products then judged useful in medicine and technology together with their synonyms and average values. It proved so valuable that it has been revised and reissued for well over a century, becoming one of the most widely consulted works of scientific reference in the world.
