Johnny Tremain (1943) is Esther Forbes’s enduring novel of the American Revolution, awarded the Newbery Medal in 1944 as the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Set in Boston on the eve of the Revolution, it follows Johnny Tremain, a gifted young silversmith’s apprentice who, after a crippling accident to his hand, becomes a dispatch rider and is drawn into the Boston Tea Party, the ride of Paul Revere, and the first battles at Lexington and Concord. Forbes (1891-1967) had just won the Pulitzer Prize for her biography Paul Revere and the World He Lived In, and her deep research into revolutionary Boston informs the novel. A perennial classic long assigned in American schools, it was adapted by Walt Disney into a 1957 film.
