First edition of Merck’s Index, the celebrated reference of chemicals and drugs first issued in 1889 and published continuously ever since as the standard Merck Index. Octavo, bound in full brown morocco with a gilt “G.M.” monogram to the front cover, marbled endpapers, all edges red-stained, the volume interleaved throughout with ruled blank leaves and preserving both the pictorial engraved title-page and the letterpress title-page. A tipped-in typewritten note to the front free endpaper suggests that the “G.M.” on the cover stands for Professor Gustave Muller, believed by Dr. W.H. Engels to have been a cousin of Mrs. Wilhelmina Merck. In very good condition rubbing to the extremities. A scarce first edition of one of the most enduring works of scientific reference.
Merck’s Index (1889) is the first edition of the reference now known simply as the Merck Index, a comprehensive encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs, and biologicals compiled by the pharmaceutical house founded by the Merck family at Darmstadt. Conceived as a guide for the physician, apothecary, chemist, and dealer, it set out the chemical products then judged useful in medicine and technology together with their synonyms and average values. It proved so valuable that it has been revised and reissued for well over a century, becoming one of the most widely consulted works of scientific reference in the world.
