First edition, preceding the Paris edition, of Saint-Exupéry’s searching account of his experiences as a reconnaissance pilot during the fall of France in 1940. Small quarto, original printed wrappers. Published in New York in February 1942 by the Éditions de la Maison Française, some nine months before the book could appear in occupied France, the original edition limited to 526 copies. In very good condition. A landmark of wartime literature in its scarce first edition.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the French aviator and writer, drew on his service as a reconnaissance pilot during the Battle of France for Pilote de Guerre, known in English as Flight to Arras. Written in the United States, where the author had gone into exile after the fall of France, it was first published in New York in 1942, appearing there months before the French edition. The Paris edition was soon suppressed by the Vichy and German authorities. A meditation on defeat, duty, and human dignity in the face of catastrophe, it is among the most enduring works of the celebrated author of The Little Prince, who disappeared on a reconnaissance flight over the Mediterranean in 1944.
