Sea Change.

Sea Change (1984) by Peter Burchard follows three generations of women in a family across three interlocking episodes spanning several decades. Young Alice is shaken by jealousy when her beloved Uncle Ted brings home a fiancée. Years later, during World War II, her daughter Anne struggles with grief and a strained relationship with Alice after tragic news arrives about a loved one at war. In the present day, Anne's own daughter Lisa clashes with her mother over a late night out and a dangerous encounter on the Brooklyn Bridge. Together the three stories trace how crisis and misunderstanding ripple through a family across generations, capturing moments in young girls' lives that are at once historically specific and emotionally universal. Burchard, the Washington, D.C.-born American author, freelance designer, and illustrator, is best known for his more than two dozen books on slavery, abolitionism, and the American Civil War, most notably One Gallant Rush (1965), his account of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the pioneering African American 54th Massachusetts Regiment, which later served as the basis for the acclaimed 1989 film Glory. He graduated from the Philadelphia Museum School of Art in 1947, served aboard North Atlantic convoys during the Second World War, and became a Guggenheim Fellow in 1966, and Sea Change, a departure from his more familiar terrain of Civil War history into adult fiction, reflects the same sensitivity to historical texture and human consequence that distinguished his celebrated work as a chronicler of the Civil War era.
