Over the Frontier (1938) was the second of Stevie Smith's three novels, following her celebrated debut Novel on Yellow Paper. It returns to her autobiographical narrator Pompey Casmilus, carrying her from the drawing rooms of London into an increasingly surreal and militarized landscape over the frontier, where the story turns into a dark meditation on violence, authority, and the coming of war. Better known today as one of the most distinctive English poets of the twentieth century and the author of Not Waving but Drowning, Stevie Smith brought to her fiction the same wit, oddity, and moral seriousness that mark her verse.
