The Complete Public Papers of President Harry S. Truman in Eight Volumes; Signed and Inscribed by Harry Truman in Each Volume
First edition of the complete eight-volume set of the Public Papers of the Presidents: Harry S. Truman, gathering the messages, speeches, statements, and news conferences of his presidency from 1945 to 1953. Octavo, eight volumes, original cloth. Signed and inscribed by President Truman in each of the eight volumes to Don Gibson, seven of them signed below the frontispiece portrait and the last on the title page, several dated by him between 1963 and 1967. In overall fine condition, with bumped corners to a few volumes. A wonderful signed set, uniting the complete public record of the Truman presidency with the President’s signature in every volume.
The Public Papers of the Presidents series, prepared by the Office of the Federal Register and published by the Government Printing Office, gathers the official messages, speeches, statements, and news conferences of each administration. The eight Truman volumes, issued between 1961 and 1966, document one of the most consequential presidencies in American history, from the final months of the Second World War and the decision to use the atomic bomb through the founding of the United Nations, the Marshall Plan, the Truman Doctrine, the recognition of Israel, the desegregation of the armed forces, and the Korean War. Harry S. Truman (1884-1972), the thirty-third President of the United States, assumed office on the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt in April 1945 and served until 1953.
