First edition of this beautifully hand-printed broadside of the Ox Mountain Parable of Meng Tzu, in the translation of I.A. Richards and with an introduction by Thomas Merton, from the celebrated private press of Victor and Carolyn Hammer. One of only 100 copies, this is number 50. Folio, eight pages, original paper-covered boards with the printed title label to the front cover, hand-printed by Victor Hammer in his American Uncial type. Signed and inscribed by Merton on the colophon, “For Fr. Earty, cordial regards, Thomas Merton.” In very good condition. A wonderful signed and inscribed example of this scarce Hammer Press broadside.
Thomas Merton (1915-1968) was a Trappist monk of the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, a poet, and one of the most influential spiritual writers of the twentieth century, whose 1948 autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain became an international bestseller and drew countless readers to the contemplative life. In his later years he became deeply engaged with Eastern religious and philosophical traditions, and this broadside presents the Ox Mountain Parable of the Confucian sage Meng Tzu (Mencius), a meditation on the innate goodness of human nature and the ways it can be worn away, concerns close to Merton’s own. It was printed by his friends Victor and Carolyn Hammer at their Stamperia del Santuccio in Lexington. Victor Hammer (1882-1967), the Austrian-born painter, printer, and type designer renowned for his uncial typefaces, produced there some of the most admired examples of American private press printing.
