Heinrich Böll (1917-1985) was among the most important German writers of the postwar era, a chronicler of the moral wreckage and uneasy prosperity of West Germany whose work earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1972. The Clown, published in Germany in 1963 as Ansichten eines Clowns, is one of his most celebrated novels, the bitter, funny, and melancholy monologue of Hans Schnier, a professional clown whose life collapses after the woman he loves leaves him, and whose disillusionment becomes a searing indictment of the hypocrisy of the Catholic establishment and the complacency of Adenauer’s Germany.
