The Psalmes of David in Metre; A Scottish Psalter Printed at Edinburgh by Henry Charteris in 1596
Rare Scottish metrical psalter of 1596, printed at Edinburgh by Henry Charteris, containing the psalms as they were sung in the Kirk of Scotland together with the catechism, common prayers, and the forms of church discipline of the early Presbyterian church. Octavo, early nineteenth-century embossed calf binding with a Gothic architectural design in the manner of George Mullen of Dublin, gilt tooling to the borders and spine, marbled endpapers, the binding worn with the joints cracking. The volume gathers The Psalmes of David in Metre with an Almanac, the Prayers Used Commonly in the Kirk of Scotland, a Catechism, the Ordour of Excommunicatioun, and the Ordour and Doctrine of the Generall Fasting, the title-page of the Psalmes dated 1596. Wanting numerous leaves throughout, with dampstaining and dust-soiling, some minor loss of text, and various contemporary and near-contemporary ownership inscriptions. STC (2nd edition) 16585; ESTC S125811. A scarce survival of early Scottish psalmody from the press of one of Edinburgh’s most important early printers.
The metrical psalter was the heart of worship in the Reformed Church of Scotland, where the congregation sang the psalms of David in vernacular verse set to simple tunes. This edition was printed at Edinburgh in 1596 by Henry Charteris (died 1599), one of the most important Scottish printers and publishers of the later sixteenth century, a champion of the Reformation whose press issued the works of the reformers and the liturgical books of the Kirk. Together with the psalms it gathers the catechism, the common prayers, and the orders of church discipline that governed the life of the early Presbyterian church, making it a compact companion of Scottish Reformed devotion.
