The Meaning of Dreams is an early work of prose by Robert Graves, written in the years after the First World War when he was absorbed in the psychology of dreams and the unconscious, an interest shaped by his friendship with the anthropologist and neurologist W.H.R. Rivers, who had treated shell-shocked soldiers at Craiglockhart. One of the towering literary figures of the twentieth century, Robert Graves was a poet, novelist, critic, and classicist, remembered above all for his war memoir Goodbye to All That, his historical novels I, Claudius and Claudius the God, and his idiosyncratic study of poetic myth, The White Goddess.
