Rare Original Photograph Signed and Inscribed by Mohandas K. Gandhi, 'God is Truth'
Rare original sepia-toned photograph of Mohandas K. Gandhi, signed and inscribed by him. The half-length snapshot shows Gandhi seated on the floor of a ship’s cabin working a portable spinning wheel, with the prime minister of Bhavnagar, Prabhashankar Pattani, reclining on a bench behind him. Signed and inscribed by Gandhi in English within the image at the lower left, “God is Truth, MKGandhi.” In near fine condition. The photograph measures 8.5 inches by 6.5 inches. Triple matted and framed. The entire piece measures 12 inches by 13 inches. A remarkable signed photograph of one of the towering moral figures of the twentieth century.
Accompanied by a typed description mounted to the backing of a picture frame recording that the photograph belonged to Henry Polak, who worked alongside Gandhi at his law firm in Johannesburg during the 1900s.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), called Mahatma, or great soul, led India to independence through his philosophy of nonviolent resistance, satyagraha, and became one of the most revered moral and political figures in history. Trained as a lawyer in London, he spent two decades in South Africa fighting discrimination against the Indian community before returning to India in 1915 to lead the struggle against British rule. The spinning wheel he plies in this photograph was his chosen emblem of Indian self-reliance, and “God is Truth,” the words he has inscribed here, expresses the conviction at the heart of his life and thought, which he would later reformulate as “Truth is God.” The photograph was most likely taken in 1931, the year Gandhi sailed to England to represent the Indian National Congress at the Second Round Table Conference in London.
