Grant, hero of the Union and eighteenth President of the United States, undertook after leaving office in 1877. Traveling with his wife Julia, Grant was received as a conquering hero and elder statesman by the crowned heads and peoples of Europe, Africa, and Asia, from Queen Victoria and Bismarck to the Emperor of Japan, in what became one of the most celebrated goodwill tours in American history. As commanding general of the United States Army, Grant had led the Union to victory in the Civil War and accepted the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox, and he went on to serve two terms as president during the turbulent years of Reconstruction. This popular subscription volume gathers his speeches, the receptions held in his honor, and vivid descriptions of the many lands he visited.
