The New Hangman is a one-act play by Laurence Housman, one of the most prolific and versatile English writers of his generation, who worked as a playwright, poet, illustrator, and novelist and was an outspoken advocate for pacifism, women's suffrage, and social reform. The younger brother of the poet A. E. Housman, author of A Shropshire Lad, Laurence Housman is best remembered for his enormously popular play Victoria Regina and for his cycle Little Plays of St. Francis, though a number of his dramas ran afoul of the Lord Chamberlain's censorship and could at first be staged only privately. His plays combine moral seriousness with a gift for compact, pointed dramatic form.
