The Seven Storey Mountain, published in 1948, is Thomas Merton’s spiritual autobiography, the account of his journey from a rootless and worldly youth to his conversion to Catholicism and his entry into the Trappist monastery of Our Lady of Gethsemani in Kentucky. An unexpected bestseller that has never been out of print, it introduced a wide postwar audience to the contemplative life and made Merton (1915-1968), poet, monk, and social critic, one of the most influential religious writers of the twentieth century. Its title alludes to the seven-storey mountain of Purgatory in Dante’s Divine Comedy.
