The Problem of Pain, published in 1940, was C.S. Lewis’s first book of Christian apologetics, a lucid and compassionate attempt to reconcile the reality of human suffering with belief in a loving and all-powerful God. Written as the Second World War began, it established Lewis (1898-1963), the Oxford scholar and future author of The Chronicles of Narnia and Mere Christianity, as the most persuasive Christian writer of his age. The book is dedicated to the Inklings, the celebrated Oxford literary circle that gathered around Lewis and included J.R.R. Tolkien and Charles Williams.
