First editions in English of Erich Maria Remarque’s two great novels of the First World War and its bitter aftermath. Octavo, two volumes, bound in full morocco by the Harcourt Bindery with gilt titles and ruling to the spines in five compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt inner dentelles stamp-signed by the Harcourt Bindery, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Founded over a century ago in 1900, the Harcourt Bindery is the oldest and largest traditional bindery in America exclusively devoted to fine traditional leather bookbinding by hand. The Harcourt Bindery uses 22 karat genuine gold leaf, top grades of Nigerian moroccos, and hand marbled papers from craftsmen representing seven countries. All Quiet on the Western Front was first published in England in 1929 and The Road Back in 1931, both in the celebrated translations by A.W. Wheen. In fine condition. A handsome matched set of Remarque’s paired masterpieces of the Great War generation.
All Quiet on the Western Front, published in Germany in 1929 as Im Westen Nichts Neues, is the most famous novel of the First World War, Erich Maria Remarque’s shattering account of the young soldier Paul Baumer and his schoolfellows, who enlist in a patriotic fervor only to be destroyed in body and spirit in the trenches. An immediate worldwide sensation that sold millions of copies and inspired the Academy Award-winning 1930 film, it was later banned and burned by the Nazis, who stripped Remarque of his citizenship and drove him into exile. The Road Back, its 1931 sequel, follows the shattered survivors home from the front as they struggle to rebuild civilian lives amid the disillusion and turmoil of postwar Germany. Together the two novels form Remarque’s central testament to the generation that was consumed by the Great War.
