First edition of this landmark biography of the brilliant young sculptor Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, a leading figure of the Vorticist movement who was killed in the First World War at the age of twenty-three. Folio, original cloth with gilt titles, illustrated with collotype plates, beautifully printed at the celebrated Curwen Press. One of only 350 numbered copies, this is number 172. Very good in a good dust jacket. A handsome large-paper copy of the foundational life of one of the great lost talents of modern sculpture.
Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891-1915) was among the most brilliant and original sculptors of the early twentieth century, a central figure of the Vorticist movement alongside Ezra Pound and Wyndham Lewis, whose radical, energetic carvings helped pioneer the modern practice of direct carving. Born in France, he settled in London and joined his name to that of his companion Sophie Brzeska, before enlisting in the French army at the outbreak of the First World War and being killed in the trenches at Neuville-Saint-Vaast in 1915, at the age of only twenty-three. H. S. Ede (1895-1990), a curator at the Tate Gallery who later founded Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, acquired a large part of the sculptor’s surviving work and papers and drew on Gaudier’s own letters and journals to compose this intimate and moving account, which remains the foundational biography of his short, incandescent life.
