First edition in English of Le Masque, an eighteenth-century French work of anecdote and memoir by Joseph Durey de Sauroy, Marquis du Terrail. Octavo, original half-cloth over decorated paper boards, top edge gilt, beautifully printed at the celebrated Curwen Press. One of only 1,000 numbered copies, this is number 64. Very good in the original patterned dust jacket which is in very good condition. Translated from the French by Eric Sutton. Introduction by André Maurois. An elegant example of Curwen Press book design.
Joseph Durey de Sauroy, Marquis du Terrail (c.1712-1770), was an eighteenth-century French aristocrat and man of letters who served as Lieutenant Général du Verdunois and moved in the highest circles of the ancien régime court, his family connections extending through his father's service as a Conseiller du Roi and his own 1764 marriage into the illustrious Crussol d'Uzès family. His prose fiction Le Masque, first published in 1751 and reprinted in 1755 and 1782, represents a characteristic product of the French aristocratic literary culture of the mid-eighteenth century, a world in which the writing of elegant and psychologically refined prose fiction was considered a natural extension of a cultivated gentleman's social accomplishments.
