Rupert Chawner Brooke was the most celebrated of the English war poets of his generation, famed for his idealistic sonnets, his brilliance, and his striking good looks, which led W. B. Yeats to call him the handsomest young man in England. He enlisted at the outbreak of the First World War and died of sepsis on 23 April 1915 aboard a hospital ship off the island of Skyros while sailing to Gallipoli, at the age of twenty-seven. Published within weeks of his death, 1914 and Other Poems gathers his five great war sonnets, including The Soldier, and became one of the best loved and most frequently reprinted volumes of the war, running through many impressions in the months that followed.
