Octavo, original red pictorial wrappers, written in English, profusely illustrated with photographs. In fine condition lacking the title leaf, which has been torn out. Text by Piotr Adamowicz, Andrzej Drzycimski, and Adam Kinaszewski. Translated into English by Piotr Łuba.
Gdańsk, the great Baltic port of northern Poland, is the birthplace of Solidarity, the movement that began with the strikes at the Lenin Shipyard in the summer of 1980 and helped to bring down Communist rule across Eastern Europe. This volume, published by the city of Gdańsk, presents the city through the eyes of Lech Wałęsa (born 1943), the shipyard electrician who led those strikes and became the leader of Solidarity, the first free and independent trade union in the Soviet bloc. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, Wałęsa went on to become the first democratically elected President of Poland, serving from 1990 to 1995, and remains one of the towering figures in the fall of Communism and the liberation of Central Europe.
