This is the official account of the second Spanish expedition sent to complete the survey of the Strait of Magellan, carried out in 1788 and 1789 by the frigate Santa María de la Cabeza together with the packet boats Santa Casilda and Santa Eulalia. Undertaken by order of the Spanish crown at the height of its age of scientific voyaging, the expedition charted the treacherous passage at the southern tip of South America that Ferdinand Magellan had first navigated in 1520. It issued from the press founded by Joaquín Ibarra, the greatest Spanish printer of the eighteenth century, whose widow carried on the distinguished house after his death, and fine Spanish maritime and exploration imprints of this period are much sought after.
