The New Meaning of Treason is Dame Rebecca West's expanded and updated version of her celebrated 1947 study The Meaning of Treason, which grew out of her reporting for The New Yorker on the trial of the traitor William Joyce, known as Lord Haw-Haw. In this 1964 revision West extends her inquiry into loyalty and betrayal to encompass the great espionage dramas of the Cold War, from the atomic spies Klaus Fuchs and the Rosenbergs to the defectors Burgess and Maclean and the Profumo scandal. One of the foremost women of letters of the twentieth century, Rebecca West was a novelist, critic, and journalist whose masterpiece Black Lamb and Grey Falcon remains a landmark of travel writing, and she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1959.
