History As An Art is a lecture by Bertrand Russell, delivered in 1954 as the second of the Hermon Ould Memorial Lectures in honor of the late international secretary of P.E.N. In it Russell makes the case that the writing of history is a literary art as much as a scholarly discipline, and that the greatest historians, from Gibbon to Carlyle, achieved their power through imagination and style. One of the towering intellects of the twentieth century, Bertrand Russell was a philosopher, mathematician, and logician whose Principia Mathematica reshaped modern logic, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950 in recognition of his writings championing humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought.
