First edition of Karen Swenson's award-winning collection of poems drawn from her travels across Asia and beyond. Octavo, original pictorial wrappers. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page to fellow poet Annie Dillard, "For Annie Dillard whose frog, empty as a glove, haunts. Best Wishes, Karen Swenson." The inscription alludes to one of the most unforgettable passages in Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, in which a giant water bug drains a frog until its skin collapses, empty as a deflating glove. The recipient, author Annie Dillard, has published works of poetry, essays, prose, and literary criticism, as well as two novels and a memoir. Her 1974 work Pilgrim at Tinker Creek won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction and her books have been translated into at least ten languages. The Landlady in Bangkok is a collection of poems by the American poet and travel writer Karen Swenson, drawn from her extensive journeys through Asia and the wider world. Selected by Maxine Kumin for the National Poetry Series, the book gathers spare, observant poems of place and encounter that reflect Swenson's life as an inveterate traveler. Swenson published several volumes of poetry over her career and wrote widely for periodicals, bringing a keen eye for the textures of distant landscapes and lives to both her verse and her journalism.
