Signed by John Gunther on a page bound in. Founded over a century ago in 1900, the Harcourt Bindery is the oldest and largest traditional bindery in America exclusively devoted to fine traditional leather bookbinding by hand. Death Be Not Proud, published in 1949, is John Gunther’s tender and unflinching memoir of the illness and death of his teenage son Johnny, who died of a brain tumor in 1947 at the age of seventeen. Taking its title from John Donne’s holy sonnet, it recounts the boy’s courage and brilliance through the fifteen months of his illness and became one of the most beloved and widely read accounts of grief in American letters, a staple of school reading lists for generations. Its author, John Gunther (1901-1970), was among the most famous journalists of his day, celebrated for his best-selling Inside books, beginning with Inside Europe in 1936, which surveyed the politics and personalities of the nations of the world for millions of readers. Death Be Not Proud was adapted into a television film in 1975.
