Small octavo, bound in the original vellum over boards, with the gilt archer device to the front cover and gilt lettering to the spine, frontispiece portrait of the author. One of 250 numbered copies, this is number 161. Boldly signed by John Cowper Powys beneath the frontispiece portrait. In very good condition, bookplate to the half-title page.
The Owl, the Duck, and Miss Rowe! Miss Rowe! (1930) is a short, strange, and darkly comic novella by John Cowper Powys, written during the years he spent lecturing across the United States. It follows a repressed and lonely office worker whose inner life is consumed by a grotesque and pitiful fantasy, a study in obsession and thwarted desire that shows Powys's fascination with the hidden currents of the human psyche in miniature. John Cowper Powys (1872 to 1963), the eldest of the three literary Powys brothers, was a novelist, poet, philosopher, and spellbinding public lecturer whose vast, mystical novels, among them Wolf Solent, A Glastonbury Romance, and Weymouth Sands, won him a devoted following and a reputation as one of the great eccentrics of English letters. This little book was produced in a signed edition of only 250 copies for the young Chicago bookseller William Targ, who would go on to become one of the most celebrated American editors of the twentieth century, publishing everything from the poetry of Bob Dylan to Mario Puzo's The Godfather.
