Gitanjali and Fruit-Gathering brings together two interconnected collections of poetry by Rabindranath Tagore that explore spirituality, human emotion, and nature. Gitanjali, first published in English in 1912 with an introduction by W. B. Yeats, centers on the soul's direct and intense connection to the divine, and it was largely for this work that Tagore was awarded the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature, the first non-European to be so honored. Its sequel, Fruit-Gathering, first published in 1916, turns toward personal introspection, narrative allegory, and the lessons harvested from life's challenges. Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali poet, composer, philosopher, and painter who reshaped Bengali literature and music, founded the school and university at Santiniketan, and composed the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh.
