Victorian Manuscript Mortgage Indenture of Sarah Adams to William Chapple
Original Victorian mortgage indenture, engrossed in manuscript on a single large vellum membrane and dated the fourteenth day of January 1862. The document records a mortgage in fee of a messuage and premises situate in Ringwood in the County of Southampton, now Hampshire, by which Sarah Adams mortgages the property to William Chapple of Friday Street, Cheapside, in the City of London, for the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds. Signed and sealed at the foot by both parties, Sarah Adams and William Chapple, each with a red wax seal on a green ribbon, and witnessed by Richard Brown, clerk to the Ringwood solicitor. The verso bears a receipt for the consideration money and the attestation of due execution, together with the embossed three shillings and nine pence duty stamp, the crowned Victoria Regina paper duty stamp, and the engraver's imprint of Warrington and Co., Engravers to Her Majesty's Public Offices, of the Strand, London. In fine condition with old folds. The document measures approximately 30 inches by 24 inches.
An indenture is a formal legal deed, historically written out by hand on parchment or vellum and cut along a wavy or indented edge so that the matching halves held by each party could be checked against one another, a practice that gave the document its name. This example is a mortgage of the mid-Victorian period, by which a borrower conveyed an interest in real property to a lender as security for a loan. Ringwood, where the mortgaged property lay, is a market town on the River Avon in Hampshire, in the county then styled Southampton. Documents such as this, with their fine copperplate engrossing, embossed revenue stamps, and pendant wax seals, are prized as examples of nineteenth-century legal calligraphy and as records of English property and family history.
