Irving John Good (1916-2009) was a British mathematician and pioneering Bayesian statistician who worked alongside Alan Turing at Bletchley Park during the Second World War, helping to break the German Enigma and Lorenz ciphers and contributing to the work of the Colossus, the first programmable electronic digital computer. 'The Estimation of Probabilities: An Essay on Modern Bayesian Methods' gathers and extends his influential work on the estimation of probabilities, including the Good-Turing frequency estimation he developed with Turing, along with methods for smoothing and for the analysis of contingency tables that anticipated much later work in statistics and machine learning. Good was among the most original probability theorists of his generation, and in the same period he published his celebrated speculation on the intelligence explosion that might follow the creation of an ultraintelligent machine, an idea that made him a founding figure in the theory of artificial intelligence and led to his service as a consultant on Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
