Johnson served as the thirty-sixth President of the United States from 1963 to 1969, having taken the oath of office aboard Air Force One hours after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. A master of the Senate before becoming Vice President, Johnson pushed through the most sweeping domestic reforms since the New Deal, among them the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Great Society programs that created Medicare and Medicaid. His presidency was ultimately consumed by the escalating war in Vietnam, and he chose not to seek reelection in 1968.
