Original Program for the Inauguration Ceremonies of President John F. Kennedy; With the Engraved Invitation
Original program for the ceremonies attending the inauguration of John F. Kennedy as thirty-fifth President of the United States and Lyndon B. Johnson as Vice President, held at the National Capitol on January 20, 1961. Octavo, the cream wrappers with the Great Seal of the United States embossed in gilt and bound with a red, white, and blue silk ribbon. The program sets out the order of the ceremonies, among them a selection by the United States Marine Band, the invocation by Richard Cardinal Cushing, a solo by Marian Anderson, the reading of a poem by Robert Frost, the administration of the oath of office to the President by the Chief Justice of the United States, and the inaugural address by the President. Accompanied by the engraved invitation to the ceremonies from the Committee on Arrangements, headed by chairman John Sparkman and bearing the names of Carl Hayden, Styles Bridges, Sam Rayburn, John W. McCormack, and Charles A. Halleck. In very good condition.
The inauguration of John F. Kennedy took place on January 20, 1961, on the East Front of the United States Capitol, the morning after a heavy snowfall had blanketed Washington. At the age of 43, Kennedy was the youngest man ever elected President, and his inaugural address, with its summons to ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country, became one of the most celebrated speeches in American history. The ceremony featured a solo by the contralto Marian Anderson, an invocation by Richard Cardinal Cushing, and a poem by Robert Frost, who, blinded by the glare of sun on snow, set aside the verses he had written for the occasion and recited The Gift Outright from memory. Kennedy served as the thirty-fifth President of the United States until his assassination in Dallas on November 22, 1963.
